George L. Nelson Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The George L. Nelson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017, in memory of Professor Nelson. He served as the Dean of the Invasive Cardiovascular Technology Program at the El Centro Campus for 13 years following a 20-year career at Baylor University Medical Center and a 6-year service in the U.S. Air Force medical corps. His family, friends, and former students cherish his playfulness, competitiveness, dignity, service to others and country and enthusiasm for life.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Major in Invasive Cardiovascular Technology (ICVT)
  • Must be a student attending the El Centro Campus during the period of the award
  • Must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours during the period of the award
  • Must answer the supplemental questions below

This scholarship renews for the spring semester. To receive the spring portion, the recipient must maintain the above requirements. Failure to do so could result in a loss of scholarship benefits.

  1. Please describe your short term and long term goals as it pertains to Invasive Cardiovascular Technology?
  2. Every year on the first day of class, Prof. Nelson would ask his new students “What impact would Christa McAuliffe’s lost lessons have had on the study of cardiovascular medicine” and allow them time to research the lost lessons to create an argument. In honor of his favorite question to “get them thinking.” Please create an argument for one of McAuliffe’s lost lessons’ potential impact on cardiovascular medicine.
  3. What type of hardship and adversity have you overcome that would make you a deserving applicant for this scholarship? Other adversities besides financial are preferred.
